Statement of Intent | Curriculum Vitae

Elements of family history and mass media imagery are often intertwined in my work, complementing one another to find an inventive way to describe personal biography. My projects often begin with an anecdote and a place. Through video, sound, imagery, and installation, I wish to illustrate the ephemeral state of recollection, while connecting it with the tangible properties of the site the art piece occupies.

Once a idea is conceptualized, I consider the audience and try to pinpoint the minimum amount of presentation to open the memory to a collective interpretation. Memories of traveling across the USA, visiting Disneyworld and playing cowboys and Indians, while personal, can be shaped to a grander social identity. In the spaces I create it is my desire for the viewer to find something unexpected in these and other familiar symbols.

The pursuit of memory through archival techniques is invariably a futile and melancholic activity, in that we can never fully recreate the experiences that we cherish in our minds. Nostalgia can cause distortions and limitations on thought as well as it can help foster a sense of identity. As a means of visual storytelling, it is purely in the attempt that my work can illustrate the inherent need for nostalgia to seek continuity from our past lives to modern life. I believe what we want is integral to who we are and how we recognize the ways the past continues to illuminate our experiences in the present.                                                              October 2008
